Rising Damp
What is Rising Damp?
Rising Damp occurs in buildings when water from the ground rises up through the bricks and mortar of a building by capillary action, in the same way that a sponge will soak up water from the floor.
How do I know if I have Rising Damp?
As a property owner you can use certain visual and touch signs to help identify rising damp. The typical signs include:
• Wallpaper coming off or peeling from the wall
• Damp patches and staining about 1 metre up a wall from the floor
• Tide marks on the walls up to 1 metre caused by evaporation and salts from the ground.
• Decayed skirting boards
